Today we’ll be debunking several myths about Botox. For those who have never had Botox or any other form of injectable, the treatment might be shrouded in a cloud of mystery and even fear. We’re here to show you there’s nothing to be afraid of! When a skilled professional administers Botox treatment, the result is smooth skin and a youthful appearance. Luckily, our staff is trained and experienced in administering Botox to varying degrees of potency. Every face is different and we pride ourselves on giving each patient what they’ve asked for—nothing more, nothing less. If you’ve been on the fence about Botox or are merely interested in learning more, this article is for you!

First, before debunking any myths, let us give you a clear understanding of what Botox is and how this treatment works. BotoxⓇ is a name brand of botulinum toxin type A. There are several forms of botulinum toxin, a protein produced by bacteria then purified, with only types A and B used for medical and commercial purposes. Over time, with repeated muscle contraction, the skin loses its ability to “bounce back” and wrinkles form. Botox works by temporarily paralyzing certain muscles, thus giving the area a relaxed disposition. Botox can be used to treat bunny lines around the nose, excessive gums when smiling, throat cords, dimpled chins, crow’s feet, nasolabial folds, wrinkles between the brows, wrinkles on the forehead, and more.

Now you have an idea of how Botox does its magic, let’s bust a few myths!

Myth: Botox makes the face appear stiff and limits your emotional expression.

Truth: Our technicians spend ample time examining each patient’s facial structure and discussing desired results. When an application plan has been mutually agreed upon, the technician then applies the Botox to targeted areas of the face to produce specific results. On the whole, Botox will only affect the muscle into which the substance is injected, which means applying Botox to one area will not affect the rest of the face. Technicians who do not have medical training are liable to over-apply the substance or target the wrong areas, which can result in a stiff appearance. That’s why it’s important to choose technicians with medical training and plenty of experience.

Myth: If you receive Botox once, you’ll have to keep getting the procedure done.

Truth: Whether to continue receiving Botox treatments or discontinue is entirely up to patient discretion. After the Botox is applied, results will develop over three to fourteen days. After this, the results will remain visible for between three and four months. As your body continues making new neurotransmitters, the effects of the neurotoxin botulinum type A will begin to wear off. The substance is eventually metabolized by the liver and kidneys. If you enjoyed the results of the procedure and wish to undergo another session, you’re welcome to. If you do not, you risk no adverse side effects. Your skin does not “make up for lost time” by aging faster. Now, that said, you’ll probably want to continue. Regular Botox sessions increase the efficacy of the procedure, lead to longer rest periods, train the facial muscles, and have been shown to improve mood. As well, after prolonged use, less of the toxin is necessary to relax the muscles. Botox is not addictive and therefore any desire to continue treatment is based on positive results.

Myth: Botox hurts and is not for individuals sensitive to pain.

Truth: While Botox may not be the first choice for those who are scared of needles, those who dislike intensely painful procedures need not worry. Most patients describe the injection as a “slight pinch.” Since the average session takes between ten and fifteen minutes, any discomfort is over shortly. As well, a topical anesthetic can be applied to the area to virtually eliminate any pain at all.

Myth: Botox is dangerous and a toxin to the body.

Truth: The botulinum toxin can be dangerous at certain dosages. At about 2,500-3,000 units, when injected directly into the muscles, Botox is lethal. However, the maximum recommended dosage for cosmetic Botox is 200 units, or 30 milliliters. At this dosage, Botox is harmless. Botox was formally approved by the FDA in 2002 and has been used widely ever since for a host of conditions, including migraines, wrinkles, and muscle spasms. Botox does not build up within the body or degrade any other function within the body. As previously mentioned, the substance is metabolized by the body over time and excreted just as any other foreign substance within the body would be.

Myth: Botox is for women.

Truth: Botox can be used by anyone to combat the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines. Men age just the same as women. Though Botox may be traditionally marketed toward and used by women, men can benefit from cosmetic enhancement, too. As of 2018, 450,000 men underwent Botox procedures according to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons. In some cases, men may require higher doses of the neurotoxin, as their facial muscles can be stronger than most women. Botox does not look unnatural or stand out more on men than on women.

Myth: Botox cannot improve existing, or static, wrinkles. Botox only treats wrinkles which appear when the face is moving, or dynamic wrinkles.

Truth: Botox treats both static and dynamic wrinkles. While Botox can be used as a preventative treatment to delay the formation of static wrinkles, it can also be used in conjunction with fillers to reduce (and potentially eliminate) static wrinkles. A single Botox treatment can eliminate dynamic wrinkles, but static wrinkles can take years to smooth out. It’s best to strategize with your medical provider and develop a long-term plan to reach your unique goals.

Myth: Only people insecure about their appearance use Botox.

Truth: While low self-esteem isn’t a predictor of someone’s likelihood to undergo a Botox procedure, Botox procedures are a precursor to improved quality of life and a higher self-esteem. Psychological studies have shown a link between Botox treatment and increased social and performance-related self-esteem. Likewise, a scientific study from the 2020 edition of Scientific Reports, found Botox injections eased depression in test subjects. All of our patients are beautiful when they visit our clinic. Therefore, the choice to undergo Botox is less about insecurity and more about personal preference. Many individuals have seen positive results from Botox in friends and family and wish to try it themselves. Others want to take care of their skin for the long run. Whatever your reason, do not let anyone make you feel ashamed about desiring Botox.
