Our last article was dedicated to exploring the usage of Venus Legacy and Venus Bliss—two non-invasive lipolysis devices—to treat areas of cellulite. Lipolysis is “a straightforward process that releases fatty acids from fat stores in adipose tissue to generate energy.” Venus Legacy and Venus Bliss, which were both created by the same company, achieve lipolysis through different means. We explained how, employing different applicators, electromagnetic pulsation, and radio frequency, Venus Legacy is able to treat subcutaneous fat deposits and reduce (or eliminate) the appearance of cellulite. Similarly, we explained how Venus Bliss adds onto the technology of Venus Legacy by incorporating diode lasers. We gave an overview of both devices’ safety and efficacy, before providing an idea of how soon after your treatment you’re likely to see results. Of course, we detailed what to expect from your treatment session, as well as potential side effects. Basically, everything you need to know about treating cellulite safely and effectively can be found in our previous article!
Today, we’re continuing our discussion of Venus devices with Viva—a skin resurfacing treatment used to treat enlarged pores, deep wrinkles, uneven texture, hyperpigmentation, acne scarring, rosacea, surgery scars, loose skin (around neck and jaw), sun damage, and freckles. According to Venus Concept, Viva is a “fractional radio frequency system that allows operator control of ablation, coagulation, and resurfacing for enhanced efficacy in resolving mild to severe skin damage.” What does this mean? Don’t worry! We’ll break down exactly how Venus Viva works and achieves its stellar results! As always, we’ll provide an in-depth look into the safety and efficacy of Viva, along with advice on how to set your expectations. What should you expect from your first treatment session? How can you prepare? When will you see results? Are there any side effects? By the end of this article, you should have a pretty good idea of whether or not Venus Viva is right for you. If so, don’t hesitate to give us a call! We can answer any additional questions you might have and set you up with an appointment–which puts you one step closer to radiant, supple skin!
How does Venus Viva work?
To begin breaking down how Venus Viva works, let’s start with defining a few key terms. As mentioned in the statement from Venus Concepts, the Viva device achieves its results through ablation, coagulation, and resurfacing. Ablation refers to the “removal or destruction of something from an object by vaporization, chipping, erosive processes or by other means.” Coagulation refers to “the action or process of a liquid, especially blood, changing to a solid or semi-solid state.” Resurfacing refers to “the superficial abrasion of the epidermis… [to induce] a natural skin healing process and [stimulate] the neocollagenesis in the dermis.” How do ablation, coagulation, and resurfacing work together to help you achieve more youthful skin? Well, the answer is—of course–three-fold
Ablation damages the tissue underlying the skin. This damage is minuscule, but immediately triggers the body’s healing response. One aspect of this healing response is coagulation. Coagulation corresponds to increased tightening and collagen formation. This entire process is known as skin resurfacing.
Venus Viva utilizes a NanoFractional Radio Frequency (RF) applicator for ablative and resurfacing, and utilizes a DiamondPolar applicator for non-invasive wrinkle reduction. The NanoFractional RF applicator can be used to treat scars, striae, rosacea, dyschromia, deep wrinkles, enlarged pores, uneven skin texture, and hyperpigmentation. The DiamondPolar applicator can be used to treat moderate to severe wrinkles and rhytides (fine lines). The NanoFractional RF applicator works by delivering radio frequencies into the skin tissue and creating “micro-channels” or microscopic wounds. The technician using the NanoFractional RF applicator can control both the ablation and coagulation parameters, thus controlling the intensity of the device. The DiamondPolar applicator works by delivering both multi-polar radio frequencies and pulsed electromagnetic fields. The heat produced by this technology stimulates fibroblasts and results in the release of growth factor FGF-2 (thus promoting the development of new collagen).
Is Viva safe and effective?
Venus Viva was approved by the FDA in 2015. Venus Viva is one of the few skin resurfacing technologies which is safe to use on all skin types, including those with darker skin tones. A clinical study performed four weeks after the last Viva treatment session showed patients were satisfied with their overall improvement by 96.97%. Another clinical study found the Viva’s NanoFractional RF technology was effective at improving both skin texture and pigmentation.
What should you expect from your first treatment session?
Typically, your medical provider will begin by applying a topical anesthetic to the treatment area. Once this anesthetic has taken effect, the chosen applicator will be used to deliver targeted RF to the treatment area. The feeling of the application is akin to a slight pin prick and a sensation of warmth. The technology utilized for Viva “uses a complex algorithm to deliver homogeneous energy and volumetric heating to multiple tissue depths, allowing for quick and safe buildup of heat, and easy maintenance of therapeutic temperature throughout the treatment.” Venus Viva treatment sessions can last anywhere from twenty to thirty minutes.
How can you prepare?
You’ll want to keep the treatment area clean (i.e. free of any lotions, creams, powders, perfume, or make-up) prior to the treatment session. You’ll want to avoid excessive sun exposure in the days leading up to your treatment session. Be sure to share your medical history and any medications you are currently taking with your medical provider beforehand. Venus Viva isn’t associated with bruising or bleeding, but if you are taking any blood thinners (i.e. NSAIDs, certain supplements, etc.) this can increase your chances. For the most part, you can prepare for your Venus Viva treatment session by relaxing.
When will you see results?
You will most likely see results immediately following your initial treatment session and these results will continue to manifest in the days and weeks after. You’ll likely require more than one session to achieve the results you want and these sessions should be spaced at least four weeks apart to allow your skin to heal properly. Three to four sessions is customary for most patients but you’ll need to settle on a specific treatment plan with your medical provider. These results are not permanent and it is recommended you schedule maintenance every six to twelve months after your ideal results have been achieved to maintain those results.
Are there any side effects?
After your treatment session, your skin might be warm and slightly red. You won’t require any downtime, but you should keep cool and try to avoid any strenuous activities for at least twenty-four hours. Likewise, avoid hot baths and massages. You shouldn’t apply any topical creams in the twenty-four hours following your appointment unless they’ve been recommended by your medical provider. After twenty-four hours, you can moisturize and apply sunscreen as normal. Do not scratch the treatment area while healing to avoid accidental scarring. Potential side-effects include a rash, hyperpigmentation, or an acne breakout. Chances of these side-effects occurring are small and you should reach out to your medical provider if they do occur for advice on how to proceed.
